Magma Design – “Good company, smart people, company experiencing growth pangs”
Pros
This is a technically challenging job and as an AE, I get to work with some of the smartest people out there, be it sales, R&D, or AE. The best thing about being an AE at this place is that you get to work on a wide spectrum of topics which helps me stay competitive as a full flow person instead of being pigeon holed as a clock expert, routing expert, etc. There are very open lines of communication as well as a very good work culture. Technically, there is no complacency - the various groups look like they are committed to fighting and solving every problem that comes along.
Cons
The transition from being a mid-sized company to a big one is proving tougher than anyone imagined. The company spread itself too thin by trying to cover several product segments which allowed competitors to creep back in into our core competency and our bread winner - implementation.
New technology is extremely promising but has been bogged down by repeatability issues which can be a big bother when deploying it at the customer site. There seems to be a strong effort to control these issues and if things turn out right, this company could look a lot more attractive that it does right now.
Advice to Senior Management
focus on the core competency.
