Pros

MSH is very well respected in the industry. There are opportunities for advancement and career growth if you are in the right departments and/or work for the right people. Most people are nice and very helpful.

Cons

It can be very bureaucratic. Not sure what direction MSH is trying to go - it changes year to year. HR lacks the people skills needed for human resourcing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

When MSH has new goals, provide resources (including sufficient money) to allow staff to truly work towards that goal.

Hierarchical organization that is slow to adapt

I have been working at Management Sciences for Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Location is pretty good, and most people are nice. The office was recently renovated and has nice cafeteria.

Benefits are good for non profit work (4 weeks vacation for all staff, good health insurance, 401k, etc).

If you are on the right project you may have the opportunity to travel

Good work/life balance and teleworking is possible

    Cons

There is very little opportunity for career growth, especially for Junior staff, as a result there is high turnover, most leave after 2 years in the entry level position. HR often doesn't hire the right people for the right positions and many of the entry level positions are filled by temp staff. In general HR is very ineffective in almost all of their functions and unfair during salary negotiations and are very resistant to negotiating. Performance reviews are conducted annually, but getting a good review means you will get a standard 3% raise and getting a bad review means nothing, maybe a 3 month performance plan.

Depending on the project you are there may be opportunities for travel, but generally senior staff do the most traveling. This is also true for technical work.

A LOT of senior management have large egos and are territorial about projects. There are a few who are very approachable and open to new ideas.

Culture tends to be very cliquey, there is a "old boys club" of long time senior MSHers who promote each other and make decisions behind closed doors. Many have a 1st world view of development and on a whole, MSH doesn't practice what they preach internally when it comes to management and leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the people who work at the organization, set aside money for professional development and create more opportunities to recognize and celebrate staff. Create more opportunities for staff to get to know each other and bond. Work on building culture of Trust and collaboration across centers
