I have been working at Manulife Financial

    Pros

Senior management is very visible to the rank and file, and C level management generally know by name all the staff under them. Once you start climbing the ranks, pay is pretty competitive. Co workers are generally friendly and there are a lot of office sponsored drinking parties, both formal and informal.

    Cons

Way too many office politics - it is the best way to get ahead. The overtime is unreal - it is Japan, but a lot of it is inefficient processes or employees. There are a lot of the good ol' boys networks, especially with smoking buddies. Senior management is not well organized and too focused on short term results. There is poor communication about business strategy and where the company is headed. Taking vacation time is HIGHLY discouraged - so don't be misguided about all the days you are granted. Most employees take less than 6 days a year and that is the expectation. There are many unwritten rules, like that one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work together and figure out what each department is doing to lend some cohesion to the company. Value employees as more than just hamsters turning the wheels and realize the benefits of inter-department communication and interaction.
