I have been working at Marc USA full-time

Pros

Smaller atmosphere in Chicago makes it a tight-knit group with a lot of nice people. There is a strong entrepreneurial and growth vibe. It is a smart place - very focused on strategy for everyone at all levels. People who really perform get rewarded well. They are getting serious about creative. There have been some big hires and upgrades across the creative department and it is having an impact on the work and the culture.

Cons

Lots of the clients are retail, so expect to work hard. If hard work scares you that is a con if it doesn't scare you, you will do very well. They don't do a good job of giving people honest feedback so people don't improve or leave as quickly as they could. It can create a drag on everyone.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication could be better. People seem confused and with all of the change in the agency (new people, new accounts) better, clearer, more frequent communication would really help.

Not without it's issues, but bottom line it's a great place to grow

    Pros

MARC is full of smart, strategic people who really understand their clients' businesses. They live up to the idea of being client partners better than any agency I know. (And their clients actually recognize them for that.) It's a truly collaborative environment where the people within each cross-discipline team genuinely support and help each other. For the most part, it's politics free. Unlike all the big multi-nationals I worked at prior to MARC, real integration is alive and well here. Very few silos. The agency has deep roots in retail marketing, so they're able to lead the industry in a bunch of cool stuff. Recent hires in Interactive and Creative have really dialed up the talent and innovation levels at the agency. One of the best things about the agency is that it doesn't stand on ceremony or hierarchy when it comes to good people. If you demonstrate that you can do more than your title, you'll get promoted, regardless of whether you're "in the queue." It's very entrepreneurial in that way.

    Cons

The workload can be intense. MARC tends to over-service clients, so when new business comes up, the hours can get really long. The agency needs to build bench strength at the mid-level to take some of the pressure off the discipline heads, who don't have enough time to train the junior people. The other big issue is the culture, which has been too heavily skewed toward strategy at the expense of creative. Sr. Management has made a push to change that, with some big name hires and a new focus on cultivating and protecting our best work. So, I'm optimistic, but time will tell if the culture really changes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Building the more creative culture is critical. Don't let anything get in the way of that.

I worked at Marc USA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They're great at hiring entry-level staff.
A few employees are genuine rock stars and are keeping the place going.
One of the teams is great at teamwork.
You can make great contacts and work on a big name client, sometimes with big budgets. In a stale environment, you have the opportunity to make an impact.

    Cons

They're terrible at, well a number of things. Get out as soon as you find a better offer. You will not receive mentorship or development of your talents, skills, or knowledge. You will not be on a career track other than moving up slightly in titles slowly over time if you're lucky. Salary compensation is far below comparable positions at other companies in the region.

They do not promote leadership roles from within. They bend to the clients' every whim, too afraid to ever tell them no instead of standing ground on something with the client's best interest in mind. There are a number of people who remain in positions where the common opinion is that they have no clue what they're doing.

There are a few people that are bright spots of the agency. But their efforts are stymied by an overall reluctance to change. The people steering the ship are out of touch; and throwing someone under the bus to pacify the client is regular practice.

Over the few years I was there, the turnover was insanely high, even for the ad industry. Looking at a phone list from when I started to only two years later, 70% of them were gone, and many of those positions had been filled multiple times inside that timeframe.

If you're still considering working here, bear in mind the agency is only held up by a couple of clients that are a distant third against their competition. They haven't won any significant new business since early 2010.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your junior talent, value their opinions, work and careers. If you truly want to bring forward the agency to the forefront, develop your dedicated employees, consider telling a client no once in a while, and value quality work and talent over the comfort of "safe" work that any agency can do.
