I worked at Maritz full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great people to work with, nice campus, creative and energetic talent. Pay was good. Hours were good. Great opportunity to work with a wide range of clients.

Cons

Senior corporate management is constantly changing the "playing rules" for the business units, which in turns makes the Senior BU management teams paranoid. BU leaders don't communicate well with their teams, Everyone is always looking over their shoulder with fear.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Govern with compassionate discipline. Hold the BUs accountable, but be their partner and not their adversary.

    Pros

Work/life balance is possible here. Campus is pleasant (no cube farms). The people are nice, midwestern folks.

    Cons

Don't be mistaken by the slow cadence of this privately-held company in the heartland; it is NOT a paternalistic business. The fire and heart of this business evaporated long ago. A few of this company's business units have been struggling for years and are in decline. Research business is probably the healthiest of all, with more focus on delivering authentic customer value. Lack of ability to embrace/master technology to enable solutions has hurt all units.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to look EXTERNALLY to how other adjacent/competitive businesses are keeping pace, using disruptive internet technologies to give their value props a face life. Brick and mortar awards providers have evolved!

Unattainable sales targets. At a minimum 5 years behind on technology.

I worked at Maritz full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good teams pulled several poorly planned projects out of fire at last minute.
Automotive clients tend to look other way as many have been working with Maritz for 10+ years.

    Cons

Unbelievably bad management from VP level and above. Most are rewarded for being there a long time and being in the right click. Sales targets unattainable from day one and set that way so minimal bonus money paid out. IT technology at a minimum 5 years behind...sales calls were constantly "bringing a knife to a gun fight."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of hiring your golfing buddies to run sectors actually try to find qualified people.
