Pros

Great flexibility in operating hours for some positions. Office location is easily accessible by car or transit. Discount on merchandise can make it hard to shop elsewhere!

Cons

The company was struggling through significant system changes which increased the average stress level of day to day operations. Compensation seemed to be lower than average though some roles are eligible for significant bonuses based on sales.

    Pros

A very generous employee discount (40% off regular price and 20% off sale price); good in-house e-learning education; and ample opportunity to move into supervisory and management positions if you are so inclined.

    Cons

Because retail has a high turn-over in general, it is difficult to staff supervisory positions that require the employee to have full availability in order to open and close the store. Unfortunately, some power-hungry types make their way into these positions and make the working environment toxic, actually increasing turnover on the sales associate and merchandising staff they supervise but are not removed from their positions because there aren't enough warm bodies to fill them.

    Advice to Management

Store operators are generally excellent; shift leaders and associate store operators don't have enough leadership training to make them effective. Bullies shouldn't have a place, especially when they're pushing out good employees. Not dealing with the bullying opens the company up to litigation. Mark's can't honestly say that it promotes a respectful work environment if it tells bullying targets to grow thicker skin and continues to reward the misery-makers with employment just because they'll do the job. Otherwise, Mark's has great potential.
