Pros

There are some really good people that work at Marketo. Everyone cares about the product and the customers. The product is really good.

Cons

Executives and upper level management don't respect employees very much and there is a good-ole-boy attitude. They will work you to the bone and suck the life out of you and expect more and act like you still don't give enough. You put in long hours and have no work life balance. Upper Management are out of touch and will be completely surprised by these comments because they don't have a clue about us or maybe don't care. The day to day workplace is gossipy. It is a really toxic place to work.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some respect to everyone. Treat your employees the way you want to be treated. Take a good hard look at the company. The lower level employees are what got you where you are and need to be respected. Just because we are growing doesn't mean it is a happy place.

    I worked at Marketo

    Pros

    - one of the hottest companies in the valley
    - killing the competition
    - on track to IPO
    - if you can fit in, job security

    Cons

    - business decisions tend to be based on emotion, as opposed to data and facts
    - growing so fast that its difficult to integrate if you're new to the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - you're on track to do great things but take some time to truly develop and integrate your people. not a good sign when good people leave

I have been working at Marketo

    Pros

    -opportunity to advance
-lots of autonomy in most positions
-fascinating insight into global business and marketing
-company seems to be doing well financially, growing like crazy
-fast growth offers opportunity to create process that is already pre-defined in larger companies
-extremely diverse team (good mix of genders, ethnicities, sexualities, and ages - it's really nice to work with some older folks, not a white dude frat house like a lot of local startups!)
-shuttle from CalTrain, lots of parking, extremely close to freeways and the San Mateo bridge
-food trucks come to the office!

    Cons

-open office plan is extremely loud; headphones are essential for concentration
-the "break rooms" are really just kitchens with a couple of small tables - it would be nice to have somewhere to get away from your desk with couches and nice ambiance
-fast growth has meant systems and processes are outgrown quickly leading to some amount of frustration with the pace of needed business and product changes for scalability
-poor transit options from the East Bay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-company needs an internal chat system for all employees to help integrate remote employees and departments that don't work together often
-new features may sell new subscriptions, but performance and architecture increase referrals and renewals; would be nice to see a stronger focus on unsexy back end improvements.
