I have been working at Marketo full-time (less than an year)

Pros

-Company focuses on strong talent, so co-workers are highly qualified
-Great company culture and atmosphere
-A lot is invested retaining good talent -plenty of work-related spiffs
-Achievements are openly celebrated
-High levels of open communication
-Great product that you can believe in and get behind

Cons

-Company is expanding and has growing pains
-Some departments have great structure, while others are struggling to define their SOPs and leadership
-High attrition in the small percentage of poorly run departments has a material negative impact in the work and performance of adjacent departments

    I worked at Marketo as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Fast-paced business - you won't get bored. Seems to continue to grow - so lots of hiring opportunities. Appreciate new ideas. Paid a great contractor salary.

    Cons

    Harsh culture. Lots of micromanaging and egos. I witnessed a peer in tears after meeting with their VP. Open setting can be a challenge for focusing on your work. It can be noisy. It's just tables with laptops.

    I have been working at Marketo full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Awesome product
    - Fast growing
    - Great user community
    - Great people (many A-players) to learn from
    - Plenty of opportunities to take initiative, prove yourself, and shine
    - Good pay
    - Good benefits

    Cons

    - Extreme workload (hard to handle for people with families)
    - Low flexibility for working from home
    - Not enough time to keep-up with the product advances
    - No consistent messaging in after sales areas (customers complain that every person they speak with gives different answers)
    - No clear career paths
    - No chance to earn stock options beyond what you are given at start of employment
    - Incredibly loud office environment (open space, no partitions) often makes it hard to hear prospects or clients on the phone

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You have lots of awesome people in the company - please ask them and listen to their concerns more regularly (make the employee surveys quarterly or bi-annually), and make it such that they don't fear being honest.It would be a shame for good people to leave when you could tweak a few little things and make everybody much happier.
