Former Employee - Vice President in City of London, England (UK)

I worked at Markit

Pros

Failry good reputation in the industry
Nice colleagues
Very laid back, lots of people in sales spend alot of time socialising and surfing the net.
No pressure to meet with clients, most people just chill at their desks.

Cons

no pension
Revolving door people leave very quickly as low job satisfaction
cramped working space
Dont always get to do what you sign up for
Almost no management feedback on performance
Bonus culture
Company has very high new business growth but they very high level of cancellations
Lots of sucking up and abit of an old boys club
Lots of redundances going on

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide regular feedback and hands on direction to staff.
provide inhouse training rather than saying you will do it, actually do it.
Dont give instant promotions to new hires if they are not proven and age does not always mean better.

Doesn't Recommend
Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Markit

    Pros

can be lots of interesting projects
Markit is right in the heart of financial services industry, get good exposure to banking
    staff are of high calibre
    highly profitable

    Cons

strategy is sometimes lost in translation due to poor communication / leadership from senior managers
senior managers not in touch / aware of all the work that goes on
can be very political, not always meritocratic
still behave as if small company even though 2000+ employees
    still no pension plan
perception with most employees that Markit is "tight" as an employer even in good times and almost exploitative of employees in the not so good times
needs to work really hard to treat employees better if they want to be perceived as a good employer

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

think hard before communicating info. to the company if you're not going to follow through, employees have long memories around promises / allusions to bonus pools, growth strategies, options, etc
need more tact and consistency in messages related to redundancies, performance management, etc
need to look after employees better e.g. pension plans, better salaries / bonuses otherwise could be mass exodus if / when the job market picks up
obsession with EBITDA and share price which seems to direct all thinking to the next 6 months, rather than investing in the next 2 to 3 years, at times leaving projects and strategies rudderless and employees uncertain about their future
need to really invest more back into infrastructure, technology and operations
