I have been working at Maryland State Highway Administration

Pros

The training, opportunities for advancement, benefits, and work life balance are the best in the industry. This is the best of the best when comparing to other state agencies and quite a number of private firms.

Cons

You do get paid on the low end compared to the big engineering firms, but I believe the benefits and training make up for it. It can be frustrating at times because there is a lot of dead weight at the state, people who don't do much and just show up for a paycheck. But if you are driven, you will work with some top notch people and keep moving up.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the dead weight, it brings everyone down. Communicate with employees more frequently. Give employees flexible work hours.

Improve the working conditions, work on obtaining a better attitude, institute proper safety measures to prevent further accidents - that is all!
