Pros

You are helping people, and they all need help. However, getting them to realize this is the big struggle. To succeed here or any financial advisor position, you must learn to prospect like crazy. New clients will be your focus for quite a few years into the business. There a lots of good honest people who fail in this industry, and there will be the select few who will make over $1 million per year. It's up to you to produce.

Cons

Some of the good things about this career can also be negative. You get paid for what you sell, so if you are not producing, you're not getting paid. This can also lead to someone wanting to sell products just to get the commission, even if it might not be the right fit for the client. My advice is NEVER do that. It will be extremely tough for a few years, but if you are able to make it, the rewards can be limitless. If you are going to work in the insurance industry, I would strongly recommend Mass Mutual, but it's just as tough here as it is anywhere. The problem won't be with Mass Mutual, it will be you as a producer.

I have been working at MassMutual

    Pros

Great place for people with strong sales background and telemarketing experience. Great compensation and rewards/incentives/trips IF you meet your production goals. Once you get a good client base, your time is a lot more flexible (good for moms). Not a typical desk job.

    Cons

Commission based - takes a long time to close a deal (underwriting, med exams) which can be frustrating. If you don't have a good manager or mentor, the learning curve is steep.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to refine the company website (FieldNet) so it is much more user friendly for the advisors and supporting team to navigate.

    I worked at MassMutual

    Pros

It was a corporate job. Relatively easy work with regular hours and nothing too challenging. Management was pleasantly accommodating to help ensure a good work-life balance.

    Cons

It's saddled with a very deeply ingrained bureaucracy which, while necessary for their line of business, heavily influences the corporate culture. The company is very much "this way sorta works, let's not touch anything and hope it continues to work".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There were often situations where the Mass internal systems hindered more than helped the employee but nothing got address because of fear of change.
