Positive Outlook

I have been working at Massachusetts Department of Children and Families full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Good pay and benefits with upward potential. Lots of room to learn about a wide variety of topics and subjects. Ability to make a positive difference in people's lives.

Cons

Very hard work and currently hiring a lot of new staff due to high caseloads. Should improve in 6-12 months but it very hard to do everythingg expected right now (July 2014)

Advice to Management

Please stop expecting more all the time, at least wait until the staffing issues are resolved before asking for more, more , more! Good Social Workers are leaving because they can't possibly meet expectations. The best can go elsewhere. Recent managerial decisions which created the caseload crisis is at the expense of your experienced and knowledgeable staff. The best asset we have is an experienced social worker. They don't come in the door with the skills needed often. New staff are trained, and it take 1-2 years to be proficient, 3-5 to really excel.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Massachusetts Department of Children and Families full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, great parking, not a 100% sedentary job duty. Great experience

    Cons

Not progressive, not always allowed to make decisions, emotional work, lots of paper work, not always safe. Lots of responsibility, court involvement that can be intimidating.

    Advice to Management

Trust in employees more, help employees out more instead of those supervises that stay in office all the time.
