I worked at Mattress Firm full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Mostly good people who actually get the work done! Bonuses are good when business is good.

    Cons

Executives are out of sync and lack leadership. It's like trying to fit into a click that's full of spoiled brats. CEO is a nice guy, but only cares about his buddies from Atlanta or college. CFO has short man syndrome and doesn't give a crap about anyone but himself. CSO is just along for the $$$ and doesn't provide much value. HR department is worthless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue and quit trying to run the company like a fraternity! Listen to the people who get the work done and quit talking out of both sides of your mouth.

I have been working at Mattress Firm full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

You bring home 2000 a month
    Medical benefits
lots of freedom and autonomy. There is no boss over your shoulder, typically you work alone in a store. This starts out as a pro but as time drags on it actually becomes one of the biggest cons
Good training and a good start into sales.
    Internet access.
Very low level of actual work to be done.

This is a decent job right out of college while you look for another job. You will be at work all day, including weekends, so it gives you a LOT of time to search careerbuilder, monster, indeed, linkedin, work on your resume, write cover letters, etc.

    Cons

#1 is work / life balance. There is none. 10 hour days, 10 am to 8pm. Weekends are a MUST. Saturday is 10-8 and Sunday is 12-6.
#2 is that you constantly work alone with very little human interaction outside of writing emails congratulating yourself and phone calls from other employees
Now combine really long hours with solitude. It gets extremely boring. After a while you start to realize this is why you are being paid, to be bored. And no one likes to be bored.
#3 Your "Promotion." No raise. You get promoted from Manager on Duty to Store Manager. This is really just extra responsibilities. Take out the trash, change the signs, vacuum the floor, mop the track, scrub the bathroom, etc. You will receive no additional compensation. They will tell you that now you can get a store bonus!..... if you well about 42,000 dollars in mattresses at a 45 percent margin which is only going to happen if its a really good month or you are working at a high volume store, and when you are a newbie you do not work in high volume stores, you work in the slowest stores in the market.
#4 Basically this company puts up a front of a management training program for new college graduates. Outlines this clear promotion track that is based on performance not on tenure. They will down play the ridiculous hours and the mind numbingly boring type of work you will actually be doing. Reality check, its retail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to keep any type of quality sales professionals, like you say you do, you have to make the hours reasonable. 10-630 would be understandable. Close the store on Sundays. Make Saturdays with shifts.
