Current Employee - Member of Technical Staff Design Engineer in Sunnyvale, CA

I have been working at Maxim Integrated

Pros

- You get a very extensive exposure to all the product development stages
- You get to interact with a lot of bright people and learn new things
- Innovation is encouraged

Cons

- Bad data management and reuse
- Lot of push at the cost of innovation and quality to shorten product life cycles

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- Add technical people to the management who respect the need for innovation and quality as a long term goal rather than just going after short term profits.
- Improve data management and re-use, probably ask employees how to do it and reward them.

    I worked at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

Good stock options, given out freely to all levels of employees, not just the management. Good location, close to everything in the south bay.

    Cons

It can be a negative atmosphere at times. Every group is like its own company, you really have to cover yourself here at all times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

He needs to be more dictatorial like the founder & original CEO. Too much waffling on key decisions. Needs to be more in touch with the employees.

    I worked at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

$26/ 2 weeks for health insurance premium in San Jose, CA. Unfortunately, with Maxim's insurance you get what you paid for.

    Cons

Third world wages and working conditions:
    - People below director level not allowed internet access
    - Company founder personally signed my new PC order: Pentium II @ 266 MHz with 4 GB storage for $400. Cheapskate.
    - Cannot originate e-mail to anyone outside the company; can only reply to e-mails received from external sources
    - Lot of people waiting to take credit for your work and manage you
    - Used fear as motivation and constantly told people that they were not hireable anywhere else
    - 7,000 employee company with no HR department. Incapable of policing themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While you make your $15 million/ year in stock options, remember that you have been convicted of back dating stock options. Twice.
And the people whose turned out products and chips so that you can take vacations in Hawaii deserve more than a $25 Safeway card for Thanksgiving.
You will not be able to take the money with you, have some shame and give your hard working employees some money. While you are it hire a HR department so that people can go and lodge complaints against your unethical behavior
