    Pros

No one gets laid off (a pro but also a con) One if the last employers to offer benefits

    Cons

Intensely political atmosphere Zero ability for those at mid-management level to make decisions or have recommendations taken seriously Lack of vision for the future Ideas from outside Mayo are thoroughly crushed by old-timers Physicians have poor business sense

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Don't discount/condemn business ideas.

    Pros

My supervisors and most of my other fellow employees are great, which is not just chance - it is the product of the company culture that Mayo Clinic cultivates, starting with orientation for several days. They try to keep pay above average and give good benefits. They require continuing education and encourage moving up within the company, even between departments.

    Cons

Annual pay increases are dependent upon meeting certain requirements - basically doing your job competently. You are always made aware of what those expectations are and where your performance is lacking. If you don't negotiate a higher pay when hired on, it's difficult to increase it other than through those annual fixed (percentage) pay bumps.

    Advice to Management

Continue to stress the Mayo Way, helping all employees care more about giving excellent service to clients. Mayo Clinic employees have a lot of pride in being the best, and encountering clients who are rightly upset due to their care, while not common, is still demoralizing. Continuous improvement in customer service quality is as important (or more so) than evidence-based medicine, because all employees and patients experience customer service, good or bad.
