Former Employee - Tier II Support Technician  in  Plano, TX
Former Employee - Tier II Support Technician in Plano, TX

I worked at McAfee

Pros

Name recognition, free sodas and Friday's free morning pastries, good benefits package. Your peers are great people to work with. Plenty of smart people.

Cons

Lousy management at the lower tier levels especially within the techsupport area. All they do is look at reports metrics and only interest in their own performance based on those metrics. Management in techsupport tend to thumb their nose at the people they manage at least in the lower tier support areas. Managers that are promoted based on their years of being there but knows nothing technically about the product.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, don't treat them like commodities. Don't be looking at metrics all day long and hammer your support employees based on customers satisfaction. Be aware that if the employees are happy, that will directly transfer to your customers. Amazing that management don't realize that. Believe in your product and your employees and that will take care of your customers.

Smart and aggressive leaders, solid technology, weak on employee recognition.

I have been working at McAfee

    Pros

Very aggressive and competitive when it comes to marketing and sales. Smart acquisitions and rapidly improving ability to integrate them. Generally an expectation that McAfee should be able to compete with the largest of competitors, and support of proposals that offer a path to get there.

    Cons

Lack of internal career paths and professional development, with an old school mentality of seniority rather than meritocracy. There is virtually no discussion of the gaps that people need to overcome in order to achieve the next level. While there is a keen focus on key indicators and metrics, there seems to be a reluctance to walk away from products and business areas that just are not executing to plan. Salary and bonus start competitive, but raises seem to be weak.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Challenge people managers to set promotion goals for their staff and measure them on this. There seems to be no expectation that, once hired, people will or should develop and grow.

The pay is good, but at what price?

I have been working at McAfee

    Pros

The pay is great, with spiffs that can earn you hefty bonuses. I have seen people earn spiffs of up to $20K if they made their number 2 quarters in a row.

    Cons

Extreme pressure to perform. They really don't care about you as a person; just about your numbers. I know this is true of most sales jobs, but it got to a point where the job just wasn't fun anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe if your employees felt like they mattered, they would be more inclined to give 120%. Calling employees on Sunday mornings is also a big no-no.
