Current Employee - Inside Sales Account Manager in Dallas, TX

I have been working at McAfee full-time for more than a year

Pros

Small teams divided into verticals.
Strong team management.
On-site cafeteria.

Cons

Every January they laid-off employees at higher salaries. Then, a month later, a whole team of employees in the same position would be hired. This was not based on merit. It didn't matter if you made your numbers or not. In fact, many sales account managers at the top of their game were laid off. This was fear inducing to the staff and made management look like they were constantly being hounded by upper management in ways to save the company money. Disheartening.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your employees who are making their numbers. Don't toss them aside for a new round of employees that you can hire at lower base salaries b/c all of the employees do see what you're doing and it only makes you look like you disrespect your teams.

I have been working at McAfee full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Smart people, challenging work, passion for customers. Financially conservative as a company. Generous to those who perform. Acquisition by Intel a major win -- deep pockets, long-term view.

    Cons

Very lean; tend to overload their best and brightest. Marketing focused on lead-generation over long-term customer advocacy and experience focsu, though with new CMO that may change.

I worked at McAfee full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Engineers are motivated to do the right thing, protect the customers. Pleasant working environment, nice people.

    Cons

Lack of coordination across the products results in customers paying for a lot of separate features that don't work together and actually provide the promised protection. Focus on short-term profitability makes it impossible to invest in major R&D and deep technology innovation that will help to protect against current or future threats.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bite the bullet and invest in innovation. Right now you're not a security company, you're a commodity product company that builds a security product. To actually provide security in this fast-changing age, you have to change your culture to accept more risk.
