I have been working at McGill University as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

McGill is a hub of interesting activity and strong research. There are pockets of collegiality. Before the economic downtown it had an abundance of resources and opportunities for students.

    Cons

One of the worst bureaucracies I have ever dealt with. Poor admin-staff relations and poor admin-student relations. We have lived through several brutal strikes. Right now we are in the process of a reorg and downsizing (hiring 1 new staff person for every 2 that retire/leave). We are severely cash strapped.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't understand why so few people are aware of correct institutional procedures/processes and willing to help solve issues when problems arise. Do you change processes/procedures so frequently they cannot keep up? Do you treat staff so bad they take it out on students? I think you could save resources by reducing error and improving efficiency, but your current approach (of dramatically slashing staff) is increasing fear and hostility and will probably backfire. I can't wait to jump ship.
