McGraw-Hill – “McGraw-Hill is a nice start...then leave.”
1 of 1 people found this helpfulPros
The benefits offered at McGraw-Hill in addition to arts and entertainment perks are the best thing. Direct management is pretty understanding when you need to take time off, and are well aware of the old school, conservative practices.
Cons
Having to dress up...it's publishing, not finance.
HIGHLY NOT recommended to other graphic designers. If you love design, you will watch your creative spirit die a slow death as it's hacked away by bursts, banners, bullets, and general mediocrity. Design-wise, it's the Pennysaver of book publishers. The genre of books doesn't offer the ability to be clever, thoughtful, or fresh.
Your portfolio will become redundant with design elements that you and every other designer knows should be banished.
No clear career path for designers. If you're going to be stuck doing boring design, it would at least be worthwhile to get a promotion or higher salary.
Advice to Senior Management
Retaining young talent will be hard unless there is a clearer career path and opportunity for advancement without having to be a junior staffer for 10 years.
