Pros

Profitable business, good place to learn.

Cons

Somewhat bureaucratic.
When key people leave their responsibilities are spread among others, rather than backfilling positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to pay closer attention to employees at Portico, and the expectations for time tracking has to go.

There are many employees with expertise in certain areas which are not being exploited or they are being assigned inappropriate roles. Conversely, there are many employees with a lack of expertise or experience which are being assigned inappropriate roles. Pay closer attention to who does or can do what, and assign people appropriately. Employees in this firm should not be looked at as just a pool of interchangeable bodies that can be assigned to anything anywhere anytime. If you are taking this approach, take a more agile approach where project teams are self-managed and team members can delegate tasks as needed based on expertise, not title. Titles are already assigned incorrectly in many cases, so you can't just go by titles -- you need to pay attention. Also, too many cooks in the kitchen spoils the soup. Keep that in mind.

IRT the time tracking process, the existing process leads to an environment where people's first concern is where they are going to track their time, not what it is they can do to help solve a problem as effectively as possible. This leads to an environment where people are either unwilling to help each other due to any backlash they'll need to deal with when it comes to reporting their time, or the time is tracked inaccurately, really eliminating the whole point of time tracking. This also leads to tasks that need to be done not getting done due to there not being an appropriate place to track the time, or tossing the work over the fence to someone else in the hopes that it will get accomplished. It hardly ever does when this happens.

The worst job I've ever had

    Pros

Portico draws people in with competive salary and decent benefits. However, that's about all it has going for it. See "CONS" ASAP

    Cons

STAY AWAY! I've been working professionall for over 15 years and I can honestly say that the managers here are completely incompetent, internal software never works, and the company is losing clients every day. An awful work-to-life balance, and the work environment is absolutely depressing. Job titles do not reflect actual work experience.
