I have been working at McKinsey & Company

Pros

- Genuinely nice people to work with
- Exposure to to Fortune 500 clients and most important strategic issues
- Well-maintained and powerful alumni network
- Useful brand name on your resume, opens doors in most business sectors

Cons

- Work/life balance can be hard to sustain
- Travel internationally can limit time in home office
- Types of projects not always ideal to consultant's career path (e.g. Healthcare projects are popular in 2009 though Financial Services aligned consultants may not want to be in that sector)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Amazing opportunities but sacrifice your life

I have been working at McKinsey & Company

    Pros

Incredible training opportunities, wide-based exposure, best-of-the-best respect/efficiency/thinking, ability to be around very smart and driven people constantly trying to improve, exposure to best in new thinking on a variety of topics, access to reams of data and past analysis which lets you very quickly jump into something, access to experts with diverse and deep experience on almost every topic, will make you an amazing strategic thinker who can consider almost every possible nook and cranny

    Cons

Work-life balance is terrible, sometimes they feel the need to do every single possible analysis when it's just not necessary (time wasting), not common to be told "good job" so you must get used to always killing yourself and always being stressed with little return except for the resume and potential promotion

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Partners often push for more analyses than necessary, very hard to maintain relationships with constant new staffing (partners need to try to maintain relationships better), place could become a bit more "human" for example people greeting each other in the hallway

I have been working at McKinsey & Company

    Pros

    Brand name
Exposure to senior clients at a very young age (esp for fresh graduates)
    Work with bright people

    Cons

Instability in terms of staffing assignments
    Frequent travel
Some partners may not define scope of project well

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure clearly defined scope of project before committing
Give sufficient ramp-up time to newbies (e.g. may want to confirm staffing earlier)
