I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time (less than an year)

Pros

- Name brand and the apperance to the outside world that you'll be somehow qualified because of your time at McKinsey
- Smart, genuine, nice, and interesting people
- Cares about work life balance as best as they can given the necessary travel, etc
- Money to slosh around for team events and retreats

Cons

- Limited number of people care about personal development
- Stinginess and overall laser focus on profits above all else, including client impact
- Force consultant to specialize without any connectoin to personal interests or desire
- Senior management are disconnected and very hierarchical
- Does not follow many of its written values, which they tout so strongly

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your recruiting pitch - that you'll learn, that you'll be able to try out new things, that you'll be able to work with high level executives at clients - match the reality - that you'll learn very little, that you'll be forced to specialize quickly without any word in the process, and that you'll have little access to clients overall.

I worked at McKinsey & Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Develops analytical frameworks and networks which remain valuable for life. I learnt more at McKinsey about thinking that at any job in my career. The company conducts itself with the highest integrity.

    Cons

lack of control over time, and stressed out engagement managers who should not take themselves so seriously. NYC office works harder than other offices. But the networking was fantastic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The most amazing brand. As custodians you need to protect it

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people at McKinsey are incredibly bright and driven. The majority are even kind. The culture of giving and getting feedback is also fantastic for people who want to improve themselves. It's also profoundly challenging so you truly grow and learn quickly. Learning about multiple industries is also exciting.

    Cons

The late hours would be tough anywhere but when you are simply re-wording a powerpoint slide for the tenth time because the partners can't agree on what's best, you start to question your sanity. Add to that the frequent travel (Monday 6am flight out, Thursday 6pm flight home for months on end) and it can get tough.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be careful about too many leaders on a given project. It typically doesn't generate too many new ideas and just creates burn for the teams.
