Unmatched experience, and great environment

Business Analyst (Current Employee)
Istanbul (Turkey)

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time for more than a year

Pros- Always learning and growing -- you don't even notice how fast you're growing
- Exposure to senior management both in the firm and at the client -- on day 3, I was at a meeting with the senior management of a big company, with the client being very inclusive of my contribution; 2 month of my employment, I was the only consultant on the ground with the client, working closely with the CSO, going to bars after work with senior management; friends who work elsewhere rarely get exposure to top management of their companies, but in McKinsey even the BAs get exposure to partners on a daily basis and directors on a weekly basis
- Unmatched professional network -- you get access to 10k consultants all around the globe and many knowledge specialists/experts. If you are starting a study, it is guaranteed that you find many people who did something very similar, who give great direction. Also, the professional relations you build both in the firm and at the client creates a professional network that will stick with you after leaving the firm
- Great people and non-competitive environment -- I was worried on this front before joining, hearing about the cut throat environment. My experience both in local and international studies and what I observed from my colleagues' experience proved much otherwise: almost always you are staffed with colleagues of different level/tenure, and work on separate workstreams, which means you are not in direct competition with anybody else. Also, it is a true meritocracy which makes sure everyone who performs well will be promoted, which is quite different from corporate jobs where upward mobility also depends on the availability of positions and how much you get along with your 'superiors'

Cons- Work-life balance -- unless you're okay with your work being your life, you will not be satisfied on this dimension
- Compensation -- a lot of people complain about the compensation, given how much they sacrifice from their personal lives
- Constant feeling of stress, and insecurity -- at almost every moment, you face tough deadlines on topics you have little to no previous experience with. There are moments when I look forward to working at somewhere I don't feel constantly uncomfortable and stressed, sometimes to the level of feeling physically unwell

Advice to Senior ManagementI'd like to see the partners better negotiate projects to ensure that the scope is humanely achievable in the given time

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
