I worked at McKinsey & Company as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Enables quick career advancement if you can stick with it for a couple years.

    Cons

80-90 hrs/week of busy work. Little learning new of concepts, very little mentoring, and constant criticism. Some coworkers will throw you under the bus to get ahead. Very hierarchical - problem solving discussions are open for everyone to express their ideas, but at the end of the day, the most senior person in the room makes the decision. Performance ratings are based primarily on how much your management likes you, not as much on your output.

Excellent people, often interesting work, so-so hours.

I worked at McKinsey & Company

    Pros

Your colleagues are of a uniformly high caliber. The work you're doing is often interesting, and you get to focus in on issues more quickly and deeply than those at the client organization (you may hear a client say "this meeting is the highlight of my day .. I get to focus on the interesting stuff for an hour"). Structured and purposeful focus on development.

    Cons

Not all the work you do is meaningful -- this ranges from having to work on a model or deck that you know will not pan out, to an engagement not being taken up by the clients afterwards. Your colleagues are driven and the work you do is often inter-dependent, so that the hours can stack up.
