I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time

    Pros

Excellent learning opportunity with exposure to many environments and business problems. Any company who hires a McKinsey person - is very lucky to get them as they are the best, brightest and hardest working people.

    Cons

Hours are brutal; a short day is 16 hours, many days are 20 hours. Partners state that this is a sign of problematic project management, but they rarely provide the EM or AP with guidance to how to address this.

M-F you generally work 80 hours and put in another 10-15 on the weekends. If you divide salary by hours worked - average per hour is about $30-$40/hr.

As an EM I have learned that it is impossible to balance work/life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There should be a limit on the number of hours you are allowed to work in a given week as this brutal schedule drives away the best and brightest.

Your partners need to take a more active role in project management and in developing future leaders; otherwise you will continue to lose the best people in your organization.

I worked at McKinsey & Company as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Enables quick career advancement if you can stick with it for a couple years.

    Cons

80-90 hrs/week of busy work. Little learning new of concepts, very little mentoring, and constant criticism. Some coworkers will throw you under the bus to get ahead. Very hierarchical - problem solving discussions are open for everyone to express their ideas, but at the end of the day, the most senior person in the room makes the decision. Performance ratings are based primarily on how much your management likes you, not as much on your output.
