I have been working at McLane Advanced Technologies

Pros

Beautiful buildings, always clean and well kept. I appreciate the business attire dress code, we are all professionals and it is nice to see everyone dressed as such. Very supportive of training and learning opportunities.

Cons

Very top heavy, there are managers who have no one under them, but are in high positions to justify pay rate. COO micro manages to an extreme and does not seem to trust those he has placed in higher level positions. Very male oriented, only 1 female in a high level position.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust the employees you hire to do their job and do it well. If you don't trust them in their position, remove them.

I have been working at McLane Advanced Technologies

    Pros

Career opportunities are great at McLane Advanced Technologies. I have seen co-workers advance several notches since I was first employed in 2004. The health care package requires zero dollars out of paycheck. Company provides professional training of choice as well as reasonable tuition assistance.

    Cons

There is very little public recognition of accomplishments at McLane Advanced Technologies. Most recognition takes place behind closed doors.
Many policies have to go through Mr. McLane like the donate five dollars to United Way to wear Astros shirts. Most employees have had great ideas to wear shirts besides the Astros but have been turned down. It's no wonder that most people don't participate in Astros Shirts Fridays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more public recognition to employees. Produce quarterly progress follow ups for reviews instead of annual reviews. That way performance can take a more objective stance as opposed to being completely subjective. Performance takes very little quantitative measures into account.

A good place to work if you live in this town, no greater alternative for this line of work

I have been working at McLane Advanced Technologies

    Pros

It is a job in a small town and they do pay a decent wage for the size of the city. The health package is second to none with a copay of $20 per doctor visit and $5/15 for prescriptions. The company pays 100% of the premiums. Medical is through Scott and White and prescriptions are through Walmart. The company hosted events were fun and usually there were at least 3 per year, Thanksgiving, Christmas, United Way fund raiser. The new building is very nice and really quite. Excellent equipment is given to employees, all laptops, plus dual screen monitors.

    Cons

Lack of vacation time, as you start out with no vacation time the first year, and only get ten days after 1 year. You get a whopping 15 days after a short and easy 5 years of service. I would say the company is really behind other innovative software companies in this aspect. Extremely male oriented, hostile company as far as co-worker attitudes can go. Feels like a male fraternity sometimes, but there are no fun parties. Pay is fairly low for this industry but if you factor in the location I guess it is fair. No flexible hours, they like to see you 8-5 at your desk. Raises and upward mobility are extremely limited as well. They did give out 2-6% raises but on average it was inflation. It is really not a fun place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Watch your people closely. Not everyone is skilled or qualified to do the jobs they have, especially middle management as well as some senior management. Try not to say things like "The senior leadership team will take a look at it", this makes employees feel very alienated and like they do not have a say in what goes on, especially since they have been around the company many years longer than half of the senior leadership team. The leadership team really needs to get more involved with the day to day work and more in touch with the real employees. There does seem to be a disconnect here. In all fairness though, probably every employee says the management team needs to listen and focus more at every company.
