    I worked at McMaster-Carr full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. M-F, unlimited sick days, nice retirement plan, generous yearly bonus

    Cons

Management id full of book smart Ivy League college grads who think they know everything, but really don't know much about real-life. They have meetings about having meetings. You are scrutinized and insulted on every review, even if your performance is good... it's never good enough... ever. People come and go on a daily basis. I feel bad for their recruiter because he has some job to do! If you're not management, you can forget ever getting promoted into management. It's won't happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off your high horse and learn something from your employees. Stop thinking you know everything because you went to Harvard. No college prepares you for real-life work. Lots of smart workers there but their knowledge is left untapped due to arrogance from the management.

Culture of fear and intimidation...be prepared to sell your soul.

    I worked at McMaster-Carr full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits cannot be found elsewhere

    Cons

First, practically no one wants to be there, only the money keeps them from leaving.

Absolutely no leadership in any areas of the company. They lead by intimidation and you never really know where you stand unless you have a talent for sucking up. You are either meeting expectations or not, but you will never know what those expectations are. And if you do, you are bound for the door. The mid level management positions are filled with people with fancy degrees from prestigious schools that have no bearing on the work to be done. They claim to want people that are free thinkers, able to make decisions on the spot. This cannot be further from the truth. Usually a director has to approve any vacation requests, regardless of what you are told. Under no circumstances are you allowed to think for yourself. If you do, you are an outcast.
But, if you're the type of person that needs to have your hand held and be told what you should be doing every minute you are there, you'll really like it here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For a company that excels in micro-management, spend more time on the floor. Listen to the staff, especially concerning the supervisors and department managers. Most are complete idiots (95% of the staff will agree). Work on changing the culture of negativity
    Then again, why start now?
