I have been working at Medical Research Council

Pros

Great people and resources.
Stimulating research being done.
Good collaborative environment.
International.

Cons

Good researchers DO NOT make for good management. Bureaucracy is taking-over in a big way. Many many more administrators discussing and paper-pushing issues that simply are not relevant to primary mission of the Medical Research Council. The admin body is no longer supportive but has its own existence separate from the research. Scientists have a lot more paper-work and bureaucracy to deal with.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trim the admin staff back to bare levels and rebuild for an efficient core that supports primary function of the MRC.

I have been working at Medical Research Council

    Pros

-Prestigious research funding body; even non-scientists know who they are
    -Generous travel allowance (~ £500 p.a)
    -Access to world-leading resources

    Cons

-Stipend is CONSIDERABLY lower than those given by the Wellcome Trust or charities such as ARC or the MS society (these funding streams start at ~ £19,000- £21,000 p.a, MRC is around £13,000)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer greater financial incentives for PhD students; there is a great disparity between your funding stream and projects in the charity / private sector.
