    Pros

Very friendly work environment: does not feel heirarchical
    Great reputation
    Opportunties for travel
Training opportunities are good- especially for those starting a career in clinical trials, who often move on to senior positions at other organisations within a few years
Opportunities to work outside of your formal job description allow you to build up further expertise and carve out the career you want.
Academic environment allows greater involvement in trial design and decision making
Lunchtime seminars with great external speakers
    Flexi-time

    Cons

Employees often find they have to leave to progress in their field- promotion can be difficult.
Whilst you often find yourself working outside your formal job description and this can be interesting and challenging, this is not always properly recognised by management in terms of pay and promotion opportunities
Salaries are lower than found elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Review promotional opportunites to avoid losing accomplished staff.

    Pros

    Great people and resources.
    Stimulating research being done.
    Good collaborative environment.
    International.

    Cons

Good researchers DO NOT make for good management. Bureaucracy is taking-over in a big way. Many many more administrators discussing and paper-pushing issues that simply are not relevant to primary mission of the Medical Research Council. The admin body is no longer supportive but has its own existence separate from the research. Scientists have a lot more paper-work and bureaucracy to deal with.

    Advice to Management

Trim the admin staff back to bare levels and rebuild for an efficient core that supports primary function of the MRC.
