Current Employee - Code Monkey  in  Canton, MA
Current Employee - Code Monkey in Canton, MA

Pros

Meditech only promotes from within, giving all employees multiple advancement opportunities. The corporate culture supports keeping work balanced with family life. Almost all programming is done using their own languages. For those interested it presents the chance to work on the OS and tools not available elsewhere.

Benefits are designed to reward long term employees, not those already looking to hop to another job.

Meditech is very stable and has never had a layoff. The company maintains profitability even during economic downturns, ensure the security of your job.

Cons

Having to work with alot of entry level employees. Quality of newly promoted supervisors varies widely.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow stock purchases by newer employees earlier. A new building in Florida would be a good thing.

A very solid place to work....especially if you don't want work to consume your life completely.

    Pros

Very good benefits package that includes health/dental, profit-sharing plan and generous bonus program. You don't feel like management is constantly pushing for you to stay late and work overtime, which allows for a nice regimented work week. Hospital software in general is a stable enterprise, but Meditech's outstanding reputation amongst hospitals throughout the US, Canada and overseas means that your job is secure.

    Cons

Disconnect between middle management and lower employees can be frustrating. Not many low level employees can tell you what their manager does on a day-to-day basis due to them being tied up in meetings for the vast majority of time. Currently, there is not enough staff to meet the growing demands of our customer-base.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat lower-level employees as people....not statstics or numbers. Robots aren't doing the work....people are.

Current Employee - Development Programmer  in  Framingham, MA
Current Employee - Development Programmer in Framingham, MA

    Pros

Meditech is a good place to get entry-level experience (sort of, see caveat in next section). The majority of hires are fresh out of college with no experience whatsoever. If you're on the younger side you'll appreciate the large number of similarly-aged peers.

    Cons

Pay is grossly below industry averages for your first several years of employment. For developers you're getting experience, but development is done with proprietary languages so you aren't really gaining much value on the open market. The languages used are vastly behind the times--they are significantly less powerful than nearly any modern language. Also, many standard software development practices are practiced poorly, or ignored entirely (source control, automated unit testing). Additionally, all employees are given fifteen inch monitors. Yes, developers too. Programmers beware: if you're into computer science and modern software development you WON'T be happy here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hiring only entry level folks creates a vacuum of new ideas. By the time someone has the POWER to change something, they've been fully indoctrinated into the Meditech way of doing things. No one with 5 years of experience will join the company, so you don't have anyone who has seen a better way of doing things to kick and scream to point out the crazy parts of our processes.
