Current Employee - Senior Systems Engineer in Minneapolis, MN

I have been working at Medtronic full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Very innovative culture that encourages new ideas and approaches to improve anything. Be it products or processes. Engineering judgment and decision almost always triumphs business or other competing interests.

Cons

Implementing anything is procedure-laden. It is not difficult to loose sight of the latest and greatest skills in the technical world. So continuous education and updating oneself is the key to perform well here.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Always tell the truth, only the truth. Stop sugar-coating. For a change, management is doing just that.

Too much politics! At least it's true in Drug Delivery Systems

Current Employee - Laboratory Technician in Northridge, CA

I have been working at Medtronic as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Very equipped lab. A lot of instruments you can actually learn to use. Supplies is never an issue if you ever needed something for a task.

    Cons

Management does not understand how to appreciate contractors and treat you like dirt. You need every sense of political skills there to survive and not get into drama or trouble. Management in DDS does not appreciate people who have a real passion for science and do not know how to accommodate people who just want to finish their work professionally, flawlessly and efficiently. Contractors who left the company because of finding another job were often be told to leave the day of giving their two weeks notice to managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to keep productive "A+" grade people. Don't keep hiring "B" managers whose goal is only to expand territories and treat contractors like enemies. You might also want to put in some EQ (emotional quotient) training for people managers to avoid decisions made based on ego or anger instead of rational professional judgement.
