Good experience on the complexities of Software Development on a highly regulated company

Former Employee - Software Engineer
Former Employee - Software Engineer

I worked at Medtronic as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Good travel opportunities. If you're self-motivated, at least on the team I worked with, you would be allowed to pursue the projects that you wanted to be involved with. Also, the nature of the projects allowed you to go over the full Software Dev. Lifecycle.

Cons

Highly regulated company. Since they are regulated by the FDA, validations take forever, with multiple back and forth with the QA team. Of course, that is good for the quality of the products, but it is tiresome.

I have been working at Medtronic as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I worked as a R&D engineer and found it a great experience. The people are very interesting, there were encouraging groups and projects. The company has an honorable mission.
Many different functional groups work in the same building as R&D, keeps it interesting.
Flexibility in what you work on, helpful in moving within the company.

    Cons

Location is nice but a little in the middle of nowhere.
Shuttle bus service to San Francisco could be better.
