I worked at Medtronic full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Future Growth Potential is positive. President and VP of R&D are go getters who understand what it takes to run the business.

Cons

There is a notable disconnect between middle and upper management; this may be that middle management is not transparent in their communication or there is a cultural barrier that is preventing candidness.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend some time getting to know the people in manufacturing; you'll be surprized at what you learn.

    Pros

Sterling Industry Reputation for Innovation, Largest & Most Respected pure play Medical Device company in the Industry. Lots of resources and 'book smart' people. Work life Balance is strong here-- definitely a 8-5pm culture. If you're an engineer your path is paved in Gold-- It's all about Product development & its all about the new product launch
culture mindset. The Best Medical Device industry Résumé Builder you can have bar none.

    Cons

Not open to divergent view points, GROUPTHINK is alive and well here, Limited promotion opportunities. Not results driven culture, Go along to get along-- 'Closed' Minnessota mindset-- healthy distrust for anyone/anybody not from tri-state Minnesota area. Non-US based International & Global persons that are talented eventually leave or are forced out due to limited opportunities or bad cultural fit. Because Neuromodoluation makes up less than 11% of revenues BIG Brother MDT Corporation (CRDM is #1 division that commercializes pacemakers).. leaves day to day management to sub par neuromod leaders that focus on kicking the can down the road into a skillful art. HR encourages office Pollitics and are rampant and wild more than most. Because of go along to get along culture Pink Slips for malcontents go out 2-3 times per year as a "right sizing or layoff-- new & similar job descriptions are launched almost overnight to replace the just laidoff associates. Sales misses their internal number 4+ years in a row but finance allways manages to back into things to still meet their internal earnings expectations for big brother MDT & wallstreet so key Neuromodualtion execs get their bonus checks every year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Culture Trumps Strategy Everytime. CEO Omar has his work cut out for him. Either innovate or get crushed- The Affordable healthcare act has caught Medtronic by surprise (no actionable stratgeic plan) and shock waves are paving the way towards lower reimbursement levels. Sub par Quality Systems and lack of serious funding for clinicals excellence may chart a less than desirable path to reduced reimbursement as they are challenged to demonstrate improved patient outcomes. Recent Chineese Aquistion was a defensive move to keep cheap Pacemakers and Neuromod devices from flooding the US market. Finally--- ever thought about serious recruitment efforts from people outside of the Minnessota tri-state area?

Former Employee - Quality Inspector in Warsaw, IN

I worked at Medtronic as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

OT is voluntary and management is generally considerate of time off request
Everyday quality inspection is easy SPC type work mostly - or preset gages / overlays
Gage crib / Metrology manages inventory and maintenance of gauging.
Pay is average considering the job description / area

    Cons

All Staffmark employees get mandatory layoff after 2yrs of work,
you are off 2 months - then THEY decide if you get hired back in.

Lack of clear direction from HQ in Memphis - frequently changing protocols & criteria.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer blueprint and/or general QC training for inspectors - if needed use a copay system for those who seek to advance their skills. Don't rely on Staffmark's general test to qualify candidates.
