Pros

Good opportunities to learn and contribute Your contributions will generally be appreciated Pay is okay. (Negotiate!) Good focus on Sales and Customer Service, so those departments can be fun to work at

Cons

After merger, things are yet to settle down. Chaotic, but getting better. Not based on merit. Accountability problems. CEO's inner circle from his earlier companies can get away with bad performance and arrogance. If you're not in the circle, get out of the company. If in Sales, it's hard to meet your quotas. Work life balance is hard, especially in engineering.

Advice to Management

Stop working like a 50 million dollar company. You're about 500 million dollar now, and need to act like it To CEO - don't assume you can do everyone's job better than they can. Let people take their decisions. Take a close look at your inner circle and evaluate people for their real performance, not on what they tell you.

    Pros

It seems like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The plans that have been communicated by the senior management team sound like they have a lot of potential. The combined product catalog of the three companies (MegaPath, Covad, and Speakeasy) is great. Once the customer experience is consolidated, I believe they will be a great ISP. The pay is good for most people NOT in the support side of the house. (Support is being outsourced, which is not a surprise.) The benefits are pretty much industry standard but definitely nothing to scoff at..

    Cons

Complete chaos for the engineering staff. The senior management team is so excited about pushing new products and technologies out to customers, that they don't take the time to ask the engineers whether it's going to work. They keep rushing projects that require a lot of time and testing without actually taking the time to test. Also, the company is geographically diverse. This is both good and bad. The good is that they have access to talent in a lot of cities. The bad is having a boss you never see and can't really hold accountable. When your management chain works in 4 different cities across 3 timezones, it's really hard to communicate things that you think need attention.

    Advice to Management

SLOW DOWN. Rushing immature products to market is going to bite you in the backside. I'm sure the investors are excited to see what you can do, but I think you owe it to them, your customers and your employees to sort out the business after the merger before you start rushing out new toys. Oh and start listening to your employees. You hire smart people, give them complicated projects with too-short time lines, and then just ignore them when they tell you that it's not going to work. Listen to the gifted people you pay so much money to employ.
