Individual management positions provide a focused experience with limited opportunity to develop into a well-rounded professional. In most cases, one would have to seek a new position with a different title, or even leave to another institution, to gain additional skills.

Advice to Management

Create opportunities to round out the development of young managers, especially within their role.

    Pros

    Mid-level managers here are hard-working, intelligent, forward-thinking, good people. They are ambitious and almost all of them pursue graduate degrees. It would be great if the company would develop them into future leaders... but this doesn't happen and these people invariably leave for better opportunities elsewhere.

    Cons

    There are no opportunities for advancement here. Sure one issue is that no one leaves and so their jobs don't open up. But the bigger issue is that there is no professional development of any kind; there is no grooming of people to fill/replace/add important positions. The company doesn't even try. Some senior administrators are unethical and intimidating, and this behavior has been tolerated and encouraged. They get away with anything. When employees see this behavior (and it is very, very visible), it reinforces the notion that there is no fairness and no consequences for bad behavior. Moreover, these leaders are the very people chosen to "mentor" other people here. It is a joke.

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of the old guard. The persistent, pervasive culture of intimidation will never fade otherwise. Actively look for fresh talent. Stop letting politics get in the way of doing the right thing.

    Good salary. Housing. Great lectures of invited speakers.

    Poor supervision. Everybody works on his on. Poor cooperation/team work.
