Pros

Flexible work schedule, great benefits, wonderful co-workers

Cons

Lack of support from management, underqualified managers, emotional burnout, no merit based promotions. Compenstation not adequate for workload.

Advice to Management

promote staff based on skill. Listen to senior staff members. Encourage multi-department training to create well rounded staff.

    Pros

    -People value and support the mission wholeheartedly -There is incredible research being done by some of the best in their field -Pockets of incredibly dedicated managers that will stick up for their staff -Amazing name brand recognition

    Cons

    -Get ready to play politics because you if you work in "Corporate" you are generally not promoted based on merit or skill, but by how well you play the game -People will be conducting the same type of work but one will be paid less -Fragmented culture; depending on what division, area and who you work for, your work environment will vary -If you are an exempt-level employee, you can expect at least 50 hours/week as the norm; people routinely work 12+hours

    Advice to Management

    Some of the "Corporate" managers need to go. I have seen many dedicated, bright and driven employees burn out or get driven out due to politics. The entire culture needs to change and that starts with the top down.

    Pros

    Memorial has done its best to create as collaborative an environment as possible and foster the cross-pollination of ideas across different arenas of research. There are numerous seminars in each department that are open to everyone and a number of initiatives that bring together like-minded researchers (for example, the Brain Tumor Center, annual retreats, post-doctoral symposiums).

    Cons

    I struggled on occasion to interact with members of the finance/management centers at Memorial to discuss the allocation of my grant funds. It took a long time to achieve a resolution to my problem.
