Pros

It pays better than most hourly jobs and you get health benefits.

Cons

Very tough physical work, you have to move fast and learn a bunch of hand signals because it's too loud out on the ramp to be able to talk to one another.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some supervisors like to kid around and act improper too often.

    Pros

Good part-time opportunities if you have a very flexible schedule; some managers are great; opportunity to learn about airline ground operations if you are interested in aviation.

    Cons

Low pay and the potential for long hours; high concern for keeping costs at a bare minimum; very, very micro-managing environment; revolving door of staff and management; no permanent increase for leading/supervising; heavy bureaucratic system to get anything done. Tends toward the dramatic from employees (what you would expect from a basically minimum wage, part-time staff) and some managers have control issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people better. Instead of on and off lead and supervisor pay, make those changes permanent for those who always lead. Realize that while keeping costs low is important, spending a bit up front will eliminate quite a few problems. Empower employees to operate in their own sphere of influence. Realize what your actual problems are and focus on them, to be most effective.

Current Employee - Ramp Agent in Portland, OR

    Pros

$12.00/hour, set schedule, easy to get overtime, scheduling is done by seniority, laid back management, 90% off Alaska's flights (for yourself), relatively easy work

    Cons

No raises, no real benefits, they don't like you to work more than 40 hours in a week, you work with a lot of people who really shouldn't be working there, bad reputation with other airlines, mostly male dominated workplace

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the girls do the same stuff on the ramp the guys always get chosen for, they are fully capable! And you should watch the way some of your employees act when they think you aren't watching. The training of new employees lacked a lot of things, and these people need actual benefits and a reason to stay there, then you won't have such a high turn over rate.
