I have been working at Mercer

Pros

The people are great. Good reputation in market. Fantastic client base.

Cons

Silo mentality means that different parts of the business do not all pull together for the common good. US ownership means that decisions are taken that may not be best in UK context. Can take a long time for changes to take place. Technology often not up to speed.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more risk and encourage more junior staff to do the same.

I have been working at Mercer

    Pros

Mercer its a multionational company, that provides you with a very large knowlegde base, and its a good professional school. Because it has different lines of business, you can learn always something new when working with colleagues of different areas in common projects. Mercer is recognized as a leading company for HR services, and that gives you a depth of expertise in your field of work.

    Cons

Sometimes people are seen as objects and numbers. This is changing, but should be faster.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People is what makes a company. Deal with your employees with respect, not only by the way you speak and work with them, but also with the salary you pay them, and they will work hard and be proud of it. If there is no investment on human capital there will be no growth for Mercer.

Good place to work, but could be improved

    I worked at Mercer

    Pros

The best thing about working at Mercer was the work life balance - people weren't chained to their desk until really late. The team in which I worked had really good social events and we worked well together as a result. The London Mercer office building is a really good place to be based

    Cons

The worst thing about Mercer is the slow decision making, it would take months to get things done. It was also quite difficult to progress quickly up the career ladder and the promotion process was not very transparent. Another issue was the lack of communication from senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open with junior staff. Judge people on individual merit not just on how the company is doing as a whole
