    Pros

Research colleagues are bright and hard working. Have not experienced any instances of unethical conduct, backbiting, or attempts to undermine others' efforts.

    Cons

There is a substantial amount of uncertainty now as the merger is implemented. Management should move as promptly as possible to resolve this uncertainty and provide clear leadership and direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As stated above, the faster that the uncertainties over personnel, sites, projects, and the like can be resolved following the merger, the better it will be for all of us.

Lost company trying desperately to find its way

Former Employee - Business Manager in Chicago, IL

    Pros

This is a highly structured, well funded organization. The benefits are great. The senior leaders are really trying to bring Merck back to its place of prominence and glory within American business. There are also many very smart and hard working people who care deeply about the company.

    Cons

The problem is that the senior leaders are too wrapped up in the processes and policies. There are many internal handcuffs placed on employees that restricts their abilities to perform normal business functions. I believe an outsider would be stupefied to learn how even simple email and voice mail communications are restricted. It is definitely a "Big Brother" culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take back the company from the lawyers. Start making decisions on your own without the "medical-legal" crutch. If you really want Merck to regain its luster, you have to make courageous decisions - at this point the leaders come across as cowards.
