No opinion of CEO

Pros

High caliber of business acumen among reps Great products to sell Industry recognition as leader Was financially sound while Upheld high degree of integrity

Cons

When things went south with a few of SP's products, communication was not forthcoming Kept on putting off the lay offs - demotivating overall - it was a great company until about 2008

Advice to Management

Be transparent with employees Be realistic in expectations Uphold the manager/rep relationship as a professional one. (they did all of this while I was there - just saying - keep at it!)

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

This is a highly structured, well funded organization. The benefits are great. The senior leaders are really trying to bring Merck back to its place of prominence and glory within American business. There are also many very smart and hard working people who care deeply about the company.

    Cons

The problem is that the senior leaders are too wrapped up in the processes and policies. There are many internal handcuffs placed on employees that restricts their abilities to perform normal business functions. I believe an outsider would be stupefied to learn how even simple email and voice mail communications are restricted. It is definitely a "Big Brother" culture.

    Advice to Management

Take back the company from the lawyers. Start making decisions on your own without the "medical-legal" crutch. If you really want Merck to regain its luster, you have to make courageous decisions - at this point the leaders come across as cowards.

  2. Merck's a good company to work for, but job satisfaction seems low and the future for pharma reps is in question.

    Pros

Merck has good products to sell, provides decent sales resources, good people to work with, and provides competitive pay and benefits

    Cons

For me, selling pharmaceuticals didn't bring much satisfaction. There have historically been too many reps, and doctors don't have time to see them apart from occasional lunches. Morale among reps is low. I don't see a secure future as a pharma rep.

    Advice to Management

I think you are doing the right thing in reducing sales forces. Stop the emphasis on call metrics-- They are not a good measure of productivity.
