I have been working at Merck full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Brilliant scientists, great benefits, lots of paid time off, flexibility, encourage and reward hard work and development, perfect opportunity to combine the mental work with physical work. Raises and promotions can be earned!

Cons

There is some politics in promotions: don't want newer people jumping more tenured employees, but if one works hard, gains knowledge, and gets outside of the comfort zone, it will happen. Raises and promotions are not given, they are earned.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the promising employees by rewarding them BEFORE they look elsewhere!

I have been working at Merck full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Well-structured company with good benefits. There are lots of talented resources, professionals and role models. As global company there is an opportunity for employees to interact and collaborate with people all around the world.

    Cons

The company is shrinking at an accelerated rate and as a result the workload has increased in some departments. This has promoted an exodus of personnel which doesn't help the situation much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company recognizes that some departments are running to the bone, something that apparently was a calculated risk. This has come at a high price to those running the business at the low and mid levels. I've seen, unfortunately, the morale shifting south. I'd suggest to not ignore the consequences of the calculated risk, it has real negative effect on people's life at work.
