I worked at Mercury General full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

I learned classic insurance business etiquette and skills. When times were good I received good bonuses (from combined ratio goals only). Working for Mercury is insurance bootcamp - put a lot into it and you'll get a lot out of it. Mercury has good vacation benefits and average health, dental, and vision. You can stand out at Mercury with above average effort.

Cons

Skilled and certified/educated employees tend to move on due to Mercury's low employee pay structure. Mercury also has no program for employees to buy its stock or share in all profits on a regular basis. Mercury spends most of its profits paying well above the industry's average in shareholder dividends. This policy results in the company having very little to invest in technology, surplus, or keeping stellar employees. High turnover results in disorganization.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a more aggressive investment philosophy in technology.

    Pros

Casual Environment. Good starting salary. 401k and Christmas bonus. Personal days.

    Cons

Can be blindsided by the CEO changing his mind at any given time even if it makes people look stupid in front of other groups. Cliques are favored - especially those located in Brea. No accountability for anyone making bad business decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accountability would be a great start. Stop with the micromanaging. Day to day changes should not have to be approved by the CEO.

A greedy owner and a greedy CEO with no concern for employees and no vision for the future.

I worked at Mercury General full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Co-workers were enjoyable to work with and the salary was decent.

    Cons

Greedy owner used money from two layoffs to fund his ill-conceived political Propositions. Too many unnecessary procedures. A micro-managing culture. Management's bad attitudes toward employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your narcissistic attitudes and bad-faith dealings you have embarrassed yourselves by what you have done to former and current employees. It will take a major overhaul of upper management or of management attitudes to gain the employees respect again.
