I worked at Mercury General full-time

Pros

Nice colleagues, family feel within some departments and locations; decent promotional and growth opportunities

Cons

During the recession, rather than reduce or cap their own huge bonuses and salaries, or use substantial corporate cash reserves to tide company over, senior executives chose instead to conduct at least two rounds of mass layoffs, which had little positive bottom-line impact, but a lasting negative impact on morale, loyalty, and productivity -- which furthered the company's downward spiral.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

-- Senior leadership should lead by example and, when sacrifice is called for, be first in line, not last.
-- Be more aggressive and forward-thinking in R&D and marketing/advertising strategies; the company lost significant ground to more visionary competitors over the last several years, and the competition also invests much greater resources in R&D and advertising. Mercury is penny-wise and pound-foolish in many regards.
-- Don't be so focused on quarterly results, at the expense of long-term company health and innovation.
-- Respect low to mid level employees and don't micro manage. Provide better pay and recognition.
-- At least a few senior executives lack honesty, ethics, and basic humane values. All should be held to these standards, or fired.

I have been working at Mercury General full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Mercury is a great company to work for. I applied at monster.com, completed a phone interview, took a skills test, was interviewed, and hired all in less than a month. The process is not a tedious one. They offer a business casual dress code, great benefits, and opportunities for advancement. I was impressed with the Christmas bonus which is equal to one paycheck.

    Cons

The company is transitioning to a new paperless software system and some locations have not begun that transition yet. This means you could be expected to learn one software program only to have it replaced by another one in the future.
