Current Employee - Software Developer in Chesterfield, MO
Current Employee - Software Developer in Chesterfield, MO

I have been working at Mercy full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Mercy matches some 401k contributions and makes additional 401k contibutions based on tenure, which is very nice. They have clear job descriptions and advancement paths. They have a great work life balance: flex hours and work from home. The custom software department is an Agile shop, so it respects the time of the developer. The coworkers are very empowered to change things for the better.

Cons

PTO, holiday, and sick leave are all in the same bucket. The medical benefits weren't up to par with my last job and have gradually been decreasing in beneftit. There is however a lack of vision from management; coworkers seem to be the major driving force of bettering the custom software department.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just empower the coworkers, lead them. Betterment needs to come from both management and coworkers.

I worked at Mercy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, nice coworkers. Company has excellent values. MyEducation provides education in multiple areas which keep the staff up to date in the areas of nursing.

    Cons

Uniforms and conformity of personnel to fit into a mold.. Some of the managers look at those under them in a cookie cutter pattern, where everyone is the same. They do show regard to cultural difference. They cannot seem to comprehend that just because people are Caucasian, that it does not mean they have the same culture. Cultures include age and regional differences as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review you managers ability to retain personnel and the exit interviews of the personnel who have left, instead of allowing poor managers to continue in a role they are not suited for. Managers have a greater function than to just save the company money. They have a duty to the personnel who are in their charge to provide guidance, assure patient safety, and promote satisfaction in the ranks.

    I worked at Mercy

    Pros

Good place to start if you want to get into healthcare with no experience. Director level management is open to hearing ideas and grievances, but has no power to make changes.

    Cons

The pay for pharmacy technicians is lousy. You get to compound medications, mix chemotherapy drugs, and help hostile nurses, for the incredible pay of $9/hr. From the director level down, there is so much discontent. Unfortunately, nothing can be done to make employees' experiences better bc VPs don't have healthcare experience and are as disconnected from reality as politicians. Sole focus from upper management is making budgets through workforce and salary restrictions, with no thought of process improvement, cutting cost by reducing waste, or employee engagement.
