    Pros

The tone is good here. People are nicer, less cut-throat than at other media companies. It's fairly professional. Senior management seems to have a solid plan for shifting the company to suit the changing media culture.

    Cons

There is little mentoring, guidance, or attention placed on career advancement. When people advance, it's pretty random. And advancement usually happens on the business side, not the creative side. I think it's hard for the suits to recognize the valuable characteristics of their creative employees then make the best use of their skills. There is an old-fashioned, midwestern lasck of salary transparency at this company. No one knows what pay ranges are for certain grades. Most people don't even know their own grades. No one talks about how to be promoted, how to advance to the next grade.

    Advice to Management

Better identify high performers on the creative side and give them a financial incentive to stay.

    Pros

This is a great group of people: knowledgeable and willing to share their knowledge. Low-attitude. Especially in the Des Moines office, there is a strong sense of work-life balance and support of individuals. People seem to really care about one another. There is also an incredibly strong belief in the importance of a good product. They will send a project back to the drawing board before they will put out a bad product.

    Cons

Senior management is reactive in a not great way. As the economy declines, Meredith is closing down businesses rather than assess why they aren't doing better. They lose talented staff this way.

    Advice to Management

They should talk seriously to the people doing the work about what is working, not just blow smoke.
