Current Employee - Can BE A Pressure Cooker Sometimes in Columbia, MD

I have been working at Merkle

Pros

Work time flexibility and the ability to work remotely. The facility is great, too - free vending machine soda, espresso bar, gym, "toys", etc. The benefits are not bad either.

Cons

backward approach to software development. The general philosophy is deliver now, we'll fix it later. In the end, they pay for it by spending more time and money fixing the solution than if they did right the first time.

    I worked at Merkle

    Pros

    Great co-workers (non-management)
    Telecommuting
    Free Drinks

    Cons

You need to kiss the right butt to advance
Only recognized if on a development account
    Poor raises
You only advance if you have the right advocate
poor work/life balance (on call 24/7)
Too many chiefs not enough indians
Working there felt like being in a Dilbert comic
Take a reactive rather than pro-active approach to problems (They had no interest in promoting me till I handed in my resignation)
The employee of the year program is a joke and is only a way for senior management to reward one another. If you are not in senior management you have no chance to obtain this award.
    Very political atmosphere

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some appreciation for your non-management employees and give them a clear path to advancement. Clean up the political environment to make it a more enjoyable place to work.
