I have been working at Merrill Corporation

Pros

Good insurance. Interesting work, keeps me thinking all day. I'm not micromanaged.

Cons

Plenty of ignorance. Management does not care about mistakes, carelessness, rudeness of employees. Senior Management has a philosphy that all should be accountable. Yeah right. If you get a raise (a big if) it's not based on your performance. People performing poorly get same as those who are excellent workers. Few smile or acknowledge on another when passing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Write up and montior those performing poorly. I would appreciate compentent co-workers. A warm body just doesn't cut it.

    Pros

The fact that the company allows casual dress in back office positions is to be lauded.

    Cons

    1. Sales staff is allowed to run wild making deals with clients and earning commissions while operations is unable to deliver and the company as a whole fails to profit.

    2. Culture of endless conference calls that discuss the same issues week after week without coming to conclusions or taking action on issues. No minutes are taken and meetings nearly always go over alloted time.

    3. No accountability; staff at all levels fail to follow procedures, fail to produce on schedule, or repeatably produce flawed work with no ramifications. This seems limited to U.S. operations as operations in India and UK seem to stand for less of this.

    4. Unable to make progress with technology development because of low pay and high turnover among software development staff.

    5. The company is quick to make layoffs to meet the demands of the banks that own the majority of the company.

    6. Health care plans have poor coverage and high deductibles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Examine the many layers of management in small departments and eliminate half of them.
Boost 401K matching and salaries to reduce employee turnover.
Establish a no-nepotism policy or enforce one if it exists.
Improve IT staffing in offices outside of headquarters in Minnesota.
