Pros

Senior management is very accessible. Employees are given latitude to do their jobs without being micro-managed. Good efforts to have employee social events and activities. Nice, new HQ facility.

Cons

Slow to change, not much opportunity for advancement unless you're related to someone in senior leadership. Benefits are just okay - no work from home/flexible work policy, not friendly to working mothers.

Advice to Management

Get rid of dead weight employees who drag down productivity and morale. Give more opportunities to employees who've proven themselves but may not have family ties to senior management. Recognize shared services (IT, Accounting, HR, etc.) are imporant components to the success of the business and treat those staff with equal respect as producers.

    Pros

Mesirow Financial remains an entrepreneurial place where everyone -- from managers to individual contributors -- really can have a great deal of control of his/her future career path.

    Cons

Our great family-like culture started to crumble after Jim Tyree died. It's now in shambles. We have a CEO in name only; he appears to follow the directives and agendas of a 10-person management committee, particularly the CFO, whose primary objective appears to be cost-cutting. After a long consultant-review process, there were targeted layoffs and salary cuts (of 25%!) in shared service groups (IT, Marketing and HR) with 0 days notice -- loyal employees were escorted out the door like criminals. Accounting (headed by the CFO) was spared. There are now NO developers in the IT department. The one that remains at the firm is in Accounting.

    Advice to Management

Upper management should be honest with themselves and one another about their true objectives, whether that be the future vitality of the firm -- or simply extracting as much shareholder value out of it as possible. I'd love to see them select a single leader with the vision, strength of character and integrity to command respect and regain employee trust.

    Pros

    Has really great ideas
Well respected firm as parent company
    Great People
    Fantastic building

    Cons

Very hard to get promoted or move out of your role
Connections make your career- if you are related to or previously worked with someone in upper management, you are golden (even if others lodge formal complaints against you). If you cross someone in upper management, your career is shot (even if your work and record had been stellar to that point)
Very narrow views and not willing to accept others opinions
Management has ridiculous expectations- expected to work 12 hours a day during peak time and expected to work from home, even when sick

    Advice to Management

I'd give advice, but it would be ignored.
