Methodist Hospital System – “Great place if you are a healthcare professional”

Leaving the hospital was one of the most difficult decisions that I have made in my life. This institution respect employees to a level that is hardly possible in the U.S. However, your success depends on what department you work. There are some that I can't mention that should be avoided at all cost. Your career stalled in those places. (SQ/GR)

Since this is completely anonymous, it would be great if you could give us a heads up about which departments to avoid completely. Please reconsider.

The hospital is a good place to work based on my experience and now counting on the advantage of distance, I see that behind that great reputation there is an organization that is somehow chaotic, too much entreched on the old ways and fill with personal animosities. There are very interesting political games played by those factions that are powerful ; MD and some political appointees (policy understood by the connections to the board and the methodist church). There very wise managers and directors but some that is beyond my comprehension that are in such positions:P Crea............ Avoid at all cost Service Quality.

I almost mistook Left Unhappy's posting as my own until I looked at the date of the comment. Leaving there was very hard b/c TMH treats their employess very well - on the surface. I left b/c there was absolutely no room for advancement for me. I read comments from other TMH strands and it seems that I'm not the only one whose career was stalled for a number of years.

The TMH system does its best to shine, but at what cost to its employees? Outside of no opportunity for advancement, the only other point that sticks in my side is that the hospital was open the day before and after a hurricane hit Houston. Yes, I know some people do have to stick around BUT administrators and support staff? Come on - the hospital had no running water. Thanks Fortune 500.

I agree, the hospital is a good place to work on many levels. Perhaps this will help future candidates in deciding on a company.

From my tenure at the institution there is a clear difference between clinical people and other professionals. From the point of view of the latter, there were (at my time) not many opportunities for advancement. If you are not a healthcare professional ( a real one not a MHA) were you can go besides some IT and some finance jobs. (patient accounting and bill accounting)
IT in the health care industry is not exactly a place were a lot of exciting things happen (They are spending money automating processess that should have been automated decades ago).
Accounting and patient bill is not exactly again a very exciting place giving the arcane world of health care industry payment structure( being in the front end of a RAC auditing) besides the bizantine world of medicare payment system.

If you add the particulars of the health care industry to particulars of TMHS, you see a very interesting situation for those non clinical employees.
