I worked at Miami Dade Public Schools part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

When I worked part-time for Miami-Dade Public Schools, I was given a very flexible schedule, some benefits, and some opportunities for growth. A major emphasis was always placed on the importance of school, which I thought was great. Compensation started off terrible, but got much, much better over time.

Cons

Unfortunately, nearly all part-timers ended up being laid off, as well as many full-time employees due to budget issues. There was often a lot of in-office drama, and not much culture and/or value in working here. I wouldn't recommend working here full-time or for those looking for a career. It was just a great part-time job for college students a few years ago, and hopefully will be again in the future.

    Pros

Small town environment. Easy to make contacts

    Cons

Some seriously shady and incompetent principals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep an eye on your principals. They should have good experience teaching--and watch how they are playing with the money.

Not too bad considering the state of public education

I worked at Miami Dade Public Schools full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

They are good "cheerleaders" for the students and employees as a whole.

    Cons

Teacher for America is ruinous as the career teachers leave or are pushed out and "hit and run" TFA teachers take over. Long term goals cannot be accomplished with a short-term staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Public schools will win if they can maintain the culture that makes them unique. Imitating charter schools with their revolving staff doors is self-defeating. Play to your strengths; clubs and organizations, the arts, sports etc.. Remember that no winning team changes coaches every 2 years. Programs must be built and teachers are not interchangeable.
