I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

- Average level hourly wage (up to $12.95\hour as certified framer and and up to $20\hour as a frame shop manager
- Paid vocation, sick days, personal days, holiday days
- 401k plan, health, dental, life insurance

Cons

- Only 3 days of paid holiday days during the year
- One week of paid vocation after one year of complete full-time employment, part time employment before that doesn't count
- Part-timers don't get holiday pays or any other paid days when they are not in the store

    It's more enjoyable to shop there. Never buy an item not on sale: Get a coupon orWait one or two weeks and it's on sale.

    I worked at Michaels Stores part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    My area had some celebrity shoppers. Seasonal smells?

    Cons

    While employees are supposed to be suggest products to sell to customers, poor management prevents it. You are not trained. If you are trained, it is by someone who wasn't trained. Many customers come to the store with projects in mind but no idea what supplies are best; untrained staff can't help them. the main duty of most staff is reshelving.

    Almost all staff is part-time; my store had PT employees typically working 3-16 hrs a week. The stores are really dirty, and the stock and shelving style is difficult to keep maintained. In framing, you are tasked with upselling what is already overpriced services/parts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Train your employees Employ more full-timers who can provide knowledgeable insight to customers.Offer low prices instead of stupid rotating sales. Ever notice that the frame shop is always 30-60% off? It's not a sale when is never regular price; the sale IS the regular price.

    Pros

    Very easy laid back work, replenishment team is in my opinion the most enjoyable work there (out of the lower end jobs [replenishment, cashier, and sales floor]), They tend to work with your availability.

    Cons

    Managers will ignore or put off some of their duties if it means they will have to leave the office, and they love to chat forever then turn around and complain when things aren't getting done. (I once timed how long the managers were in the office talking while i was organizing an area close enough to hear what they were saying...a riveting 48 minute talk about how the men in their life were unsatisfactory only interrupted buy a cashier who had asked 3 times for more change.)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Managers actually need to do their jobs at least 90% of the time, acknowledge the work your employees do, and make the employee of the month program actually worth something and pick someone who has actually been working hard don't just choose someone because you have to.
