I worked at Micrel full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Nice and friendly working environment.
A person can be involved in the entire design cycle starting from conception to product release.
Talented and smart co-workers.

Cons

Limited upside due to tough business condition.
Though smart - relatively new and inexperienced design and marketing mid-level management.
Uses relatively older in-house processes which may not be a prudent approach all the time.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring a very experienced outsider as CEO who has new ideas and visions and will be able to balance vision and capability and lead the company to success.

The company culture is aggressive and a little bit mean-spirited, but this one is strict and religious, too.

I have been working at Micrel full-time

    Pros

People stay a long time if they can deal with the work load and the atmosphere. They admire age at Micrel, which is refreshing, and most of the workers are over 50. It is very unfair to younger workers, though. It's very old fashioned--the men wear ties and no one is allowed to wear jeans, even on Fridays. It's steady and slow to change. They have great benefits, and they try to avoid layoffs. People have been there for 30 years and can retire from there. That's almost an impossibility anywhere else in Silicon Valley.

    Cons

Quarterly furloughs equal a forced month off every year without pay. This lowers the overall salary employees are promised. Old fashioned company means old fashioned products, old fashioned way of doing business, and an old fashioned look. They also have old technology--it's not unusual to see people using Microsoft Office 2003 and computers that are more than seven years old. The Internet is not available to all employees--some aren't even allowed an email address, and others have the Internet blocked except during lunch. The CEO brags that Micrel runs like a big company with 20% of the staff. That's true, but the result is often long hours, slow time to market, and burnout is rampant. Many people are just staying long enough to retire.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get into the 21st Century. Treat your people better. Don't say you're a family friendly company if you aren't. And you aren't. Either walk the talk or change the talk. Be up front with new employees about furlough days, and what else they can expect before they accept a job. Look at products that the competition sell and figure out why your fab runs at 50% capacity. Spend money wisely instead of just being cheap on important business tools and spending extravagantly on random things. Look into policies and procedures and decide whether they're still relevant to a 21st century company.
