Former Employee - Director of Engineering in San Jose, CA

Pros

Nice and friendly working environment.
A person can be involved in the entire design cycle starting from conception to product release.
Talented and smart co-workers.

Cons

Limited upside due to tough business condition.
Though smart - relatively new and inexperienced design and marketing mid-level management.
Uses relatively older in-house processes which may not be a prudent approach all the time.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring a very experienced outsider as CEO who has new ideas and visions and will be able to balance vision and capability and lead the company to success.

CEO runs the company like a puppet show

Current Employee - Staff Design Engineer  in  San Jose, CA
Current Employee - Staff Design Engineer in San Jose, CA

    Pros

Good group of engineers working in the lower levels. The higher you go, the more outdated their thought process.

    Cons

Ray Zinn, the CEO, has kept the company from growing by chasing away too many talented people. He is reluctant to attract talent by pay and falsely believes that he is charismatic enough to drive business. In fact, the CEO has dropped the ball on numerous technical innovations and market opportunities.

Instead of putting more money into R&D or employee compensation, Micrel pays out big dividends which lines the pockets of the CEO and upper management. Ray Zinn uses the "dividend attracts investors" line to justify the payouts, but Micrel stock has been stagnant for the last few years. Good products and good employees lead to a growing company. Cutting pay and benefits are never the answer.

Company morale is extremely low in the lower ranks due to dwindling benefits. HR department needs to do more and needs to stand up to management once in a while.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The CEO needs to retire. The company needs to put more money into R&D to come up with better products. TI and Maxim is wiping the floor with Micrel...
